Debunking Starlink myth !!

"51% of Americans plan to sign up for Starlink Internet service"

This survey is a full non-sense. The sat engineer that I am will explain you why i am stating that:

Rough estimate of Starlink constellation total bandwidth is 240 Tbps (i.e Tera bit per second) = 20Gbps per satellite x 12 000 satellites (based on public information). Most of the time the broadband satellite capacity cumulate upload and download (1/3 + 2/3) but let's assume that each satellite has 2Gbps download capacity.

But the principle of a satellite constellation is that the satellites are covering the entire Earth surface.

and as USA represent 2% of the earth surface, US population will be,efit of 2% of the Starlink capacity.

So this leaves 4.7 Tbps of downlink capacity.

the survey indicates that people will use is 1st for High quality streaming of online gaming. the specific of this kind of application is that is requires a constant bitrate (typically 10 mbps per screen for a very good HD or average 4K video stream) and that most of the people use this service at the same time, often in the evening.

So how many US user can Starlink serve at peak hour ?

4.7 Tbps / 10 Mbps = 470 k concommitent users. full stop.

So what is the point claiming that 51% of Americans plan to sign up for Starlink Internet service to benefit of high quality streaming or online gaming ?
